Euphemia (after Calvino) (Gozo, 2011)

The saltpans at Xwejni in Gozo were created by the Knights of St John in the 16th Century at a time where salt was a key trading commodity and a symbol of wealth and power in the Mediterranean, despite being in its saline form a plentiful commodity. The image of the container ship passing through the adjacent shipping route seemed to evoke the narratives of wealth, trade and power. Euphemia is one of Calvino's invisible cities, where commodities are traded by day and stories by night.
